Swivel castors by Gesa

Swivel castors consist of a Wheel in a steering fork (see housing series) - in various designs - with special attachment options. Steering rollers serve as non-driven support wheels that align with the current direction of movement. They can be moved in all directions and, above all, around curves or corners. Swivel castors are the counterpart to the non-swivelling fixed castors. Optionally, our swivel castors are also available with a total brake in the front or rear end and/or with a directional lock, which only fixes the steering movement and thus turns the swivel castor into a fixed castor for directional purposes.

Structure and movement behavior of the castors

Swivel castors consist of one or two rollers that are mounted on an object with an axis of rotation in the vertical direction. If the castors are forced by the moving object in a direction that does not correspond to the current orientation of the castors, the wheel rotates around the vertical axis of rotation in the new direction of movement. This enables the roll to be realigned quickly and compensates for a directional error.

The rolling resistance  of swivel castors varies depending on the material properties of the wheels, load, temperature, soil conditions, etc. but also depending on, among other things whether the wheels with

Roller bearing

or plain bearing.

You can find information on rolling resistance on our product pages using graphic representations.

Types of caster housing

RAR swivel housing

Load capacity up to 100 kg
Diameter 75-125 mm

Sheet steel housing with bolt hole attachment. Fork head with double ball ring. The base plate is firmly riveted to the fork part, we ensure that there is little play in the fork head with high ease of movement. The RAR series is suitable for hand-shifted loads of up to 100 kg.

Steering housing series LAR

Load capacity up to 100 kg
Diameter 75-125 mm

Sheet steel housing with plate attachment. Fork head with double ball ring. The base plate is firmly riveted to the fork part, we ensure that there is little play in the fork head with high ease of movement. The LAR series is suitable for hand-shifted loads of up to 100 kg.

Steering housing series R

Load capacity up to 400 kg
Diameter 80-200 mm

Sheet steel housing with bolt hole attachment. Fork head with double ball ring. The base plate is firmly riveted to the fork part, we ensure that there is little play in the fork head with high ease of movement. The R series is suitable for hand-shifted capacities up to 400 kg.

Steering housing series L

Load capacity up to 500 kg
Diameter 80-260 mm

Sheet steel housing with plate attachment. Fork head with double ball race and sealing ring to prevent dirt and dust from penetrating. The base plate is firmly riveted to the fork part, while we ensure that there is little play in the fork head with high ease of movement. The L series is suitable for hand-shifted loads of up to 500 kg.

Steering housing series LG

Load capacity up to 900 kg
Diameter 100 -250mm

Sheet steel housing with plate attachment. Fork head with double ball ring and with hardened bearing shells, making them largely insensitive to impacts. The greased ball tracks are protected against the ingress of dirt and dust with sealing rings. The base plate is firmly screwed to the
fork part and secured, while we ensure that there is little play in the fork head with the greatest possible ease of movement.

Steering housing series LVK

Load capacity up to 1000 kg
Diameter 125-200 mm

Sheet steel housing with plate mounting. There is a sealed 2RS ball bearing in the fork head. The ball bearing is protected against the ingress of dirt and dust. The base plate with four screw holes is firmly screwed to the fork part and secured to ensure the greatest possible ease of movement with the smallest amount of play in the fork head.

LLAK series swivel housing

Load capacity up to 2500 kg
Diameter 100-520 mm

Steering forks with plate attachment of the LLAK series are heavy-duty welded steel constructions. The slewing ring in the fork head has double bearings with an axial grooved ball bearing (DIN 711/ISO 104) and tapered roller bearing (DIN720/ISO 355). Although the bearings are lubricated for life, they can also be relubricated using a grease nipple if necessary. Fork part and fork head are screwed to a very robust central bolt and secured by riveting, the fork is yellow chromated.

Steering housing series LAK

Load capacity up to 10000 kg
Diameter 100-300 mm

Steering forks with plate attachment from the LAK series are welded steel constructions in an extremely heavy design. The slewing ring in the fork head has double bearings with an axial grooved ball bearing (DIN 711/ISO 104) and tapered roller bearing (DIN 720/ISO 355). Although the bearings are lubricated for life, they can also be relubricated using a grease nipple if necessary. Fork part and fork head are bolted to a very robust central bolt and secured with a spot weld, the fork is yellow chromated.

Fixer variants

  • Wheel lock (FST)
It only locks the wheel and not the turntable
  • Total lock (FSTF or FSTR)
It blocks both the wheel and the slewing ring
  • Direction lock (RFST)
It is used to temporarily fix the steering movement. 1x360° or 4x90° (the swivel castor thus becomes a fixed castor for a short time)
  • Locker in the caster (FSTF)
This means that the lock is behind the wheel in the direction of travel, i.e. "runs behind"
  • Fixer in advance (FSTR)
This means that the brake is in front of the wheel in the direction of travel, i.e. "runs ahead"
  • Ideal stop (FSTP or FSTD, FSTZ)
This means that the locking lever/mechanism remains in one position or does not follow the rotation of the castor"
